Seasonal Tips

Summer Car Maintenance Checklist for Georgia Drivers

Georgia Heat Is Hard on Your Vehicle

Summer temperatures in Georgia regularly climb above 95 degrees, and pavement temperatures can exceed 140 degrees. That kind of heat puts extreme stress on your vehicle’s cooling system, tires, battery, and fluids. A little preventive maintenance before summer hits can save you from an unexpected breakdown on the side of the road.

Use this checklist to prepare your vehicle for the hottest months of the year.

Check Your Cooling System

Your engine’s cooling system works hardest during summer. A failure in this system can lead to overheating, which causes severe and costly engine damage.

  • Inspect coolant level and condition — Coolant should be at the proper level and appear clean, not murky or discolored. If it has not been flushed in two years or 30,000 miles, it is time for a coolant flush.
  • Check hoses and connections — Rubber hoses become brittle over time, especially in high heat. Look for cracks, bulges, or soft spots that indicate a hose is near failure.
  • Test the radiator cap — A faulty radiator cap cannot maintain proper system pressure, which lowers the boiling point of your coolant and increases overheating risk.
  • Inspect the water pump — Listen for whining noises from the front of the engine and look for coolant leaks near the pump.

Inspect Your Tires

Hot pavement accelerates tire wear and increases the risk of blowouts, especially on underinflated tires.

  • Check tire pressure — Tire pressure increases as temperatures rise. Check your pressures when the tires are cold and adjust to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI found on the driver’s door jamb sticker.
  • Inspect tread depth — Use the penny test: insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see the top of his head, the tread is too shallow and it is time for new tires.
  • Look for damage — Check sidewalls for bulges, cuts, or cracks that could lead to a blowout in extreme heat.

Test Your Air Conditioning

There is nothing worse than discovering your AC does not work on the first truly hot day of summer. Get ahead of it.

  • Run the AC before you need it — Turn it on and verify it blows cold air consistently. If it takes a long time to cool down or blows warm air, you likely need a refrigerant recharge or system inspection.
  • Check for unusual smells — Musty odors when the AC runs often indicate mold or bacteria buildup in the evaporator, which can be resolved with an AC system cleaning.
  • Listen for unusual sounds — Clicking, rattling, or grinding from the AC system can signal a failing compressor or worn belt.

Check Your Battery

Heat is actually harder on car batteries than cold weather. High temperatures accelerate the chemical reaction inside the battery, which shortens its lifespan and can cause premature failure.

  • Test battery voltage — A fully charged battery should read around 12.6 volts. Anything below 12.4 volts suggests the battery is losing its charge.
  • Inspect terminals — Clean any corrosion from the battery terminals with a wire brush. Corroded connections reduce charging efficiency and can prevent your vehicle from starting.
  • Check the battery age — Most car batteries last three to five years. If yours is approaching that range, consider replacing it before it fails unexpectedly.

Top Off All Fluids

Summer heat causes fluids to break down and evaporate faster than normal.

  • Engine oil — Verify your oil level is correct and that you are not overdue for an oil change. Old oil loses its protective properties more quickly in extreme heat.
  • Brake fluid — Low brake fluid can indicate worn brake pads or a leak in the system. Both need immediate attention.
  • Transmission fluid — Check the level and color. Healthy transmission fluid is typically red or pink. Dark brown or black fluid needs to be replaced.
  • Windshield washer fluid — Summer storms and bug splatter mean you will use more washer fluid. Keep it topped off for clear visibility.
